- <p> DIED. Claudio Arrau, 88, one of the premier piano virtuosos
- of the 20th century; in Murzzuschlag, Austria. Born in Chillan in
- central Chile in 1903, Arrau displayed the talents of a prodigy
- four years later by playing from memory pieces his mother had
- taught to her piano students. By age five he presented his
- first concert, of Mozart, Beethoven and Schumann. For the next
- eight decades the pianist would dazzle audiences worldwide with
- a unique blend of brute strength and introspective clarity.
- Critics hailed his performances of Liszt, Chopin, Brahms and
- Debussy.
