  14. <p>     DIED. Claudio Arrau, 88, one of the premier piano virtuosos
  15. of the 20th century; in Murzzuschlag, Austria. Born in Chillan in
  16. central Chile in 1903, Arrau displayed the talents of a prodigy
  17. four years later by playing from memory pieces his mother had
  18. taught to her piano students. By age five he presented his
  19. first concert, of Mozart, Beethoven and Schumann. For the next
  20. eight decades the pianist would dazzle audiences worldwide with
  21. a unique blend of brute strength and introspective clarity.
  22. Critics hailed his performances of Liszt, Chopin, Brahms and
  23. Debussy.
